Do you need a taxi license? You might, and might not even know that you do! A taxi license allows you to drive and carry passengers to make a profit, and that means that a taxi license isn’t just for a taxi driver! Sure, if you run a taxi service then you’ll need one. But if you want to work for Uber or drive an Uber taxi you’ll need one too (check out our review of Uber to find out more about that). Or what about if you get paid to drive kids to school? You guessed it, you’re going to need to get a taxi license. Basically, if you have people in your car and you get paid to drive them somewhere, you’ll need a taxi license. The good news is that the process is pretty simple, and we’re here to tell you everything you need to know, including things you might not have considered like taxi insurance!
How to File an Application for a Taxi License
Like we said, the processing of getting a taxi license is relatively simple, but you’ll need to be prepared to do some paperwork! The first thing that you’ll need to do is to file the official application form, this is called the 1A application form and you can download one by clicking on that link.
Next, you’re going to need a certified copy of your ID. That just means a copy of your ID that’s been certified by a lawyer to say that it’s really you in the picture! Alternatively, you can get a certified copy of your Company Registration Certificate (CC) if you have one.
Last, you’ll need to complete an affidavit (a document that says certain things are true). You can download the affidavit form by clicking on that link. This document says that you have not been convicted of a violent crime or a crime involving illegal weapons.
You’ll also need to pay a R300 fee. All of these documents go off to your local Public Transport Service Centre (and you can easily find where that is by searching for that term plus the province name). In many cases you can submit all your paperwork online, though in some circumstances or in some provinces you might be required to file papers in person or by mail.
What Else Should I Know About Getting a Taxi License?
Well, obviously, you’ll need to have a driving license! In order to get a taxi operating licence, you may also need to be a member of a taxi association (an association that includes many taxi drivers and that generally provides help and advice as well as representing the interests of taxi drivers to the government, usually in return for an annual fee).
Once your application has been received you’ll get a receipt that says it’s been processed. After that it can take up to 60 days to get your taxi license. Your license will be valid for up to five years, and once you have it you’ll need to put a special sticker on your vehicle.
You’ll also need to think about car insurance, since the rules for taxis are different from those for personal cars. Again, you can read more about that in our article about taxi insurance. Insurance is important for taxis, since statistics suggest that taxis have double the accident rates of regular passenger cars.
Getting a Taxi License: The Bottom Line
If you’re going to drive passengers then it’s in your own best interest to get a taxi license as well as taxi insurance and all the appropriate documents you need so that you don’t get into trouble with the law. When it comes to getting a taxi license, the process is pretty easy, so there’s no reason not to go ahead! And don’t forget, a taxi license isn’t just for taxi drivers!
