For most of us a driver’s license is a necessity, and that means staying on top of when your license expires. Driving with an expired license is a crime, and if caught you will be fined a fair amount of cash. That’s why we’re here to tell you all about license renewal. If you don’t know how to renew your driver’s license, then read on and find out more. It’s easy!
When Do I Need to Think About License Renewal?
You must renew your license at least four weeks before the expiry date stated on your license. If you don’t, then your license will expire while you’re waiting for your new one. In this case, the DLTC (Driving License Testing Center) will require you to pay for a temporary license. So in the interests of saving money you might want to keep an eye on that driver license expiry date!
What Do I Need to Renew My License?
You will need to take a few things with you to renew your license. You’ll need your old license AND your identification card, as well as four black and white photographs. You’ll also need to fill out a DL1 form (form for driver’s license renewal), which you can find at the DLTC.
What Will Happen at the DLTC?!
If you are renewing your license you do NOT have to take your driver’s test again (which is good news!). You will present your paperwork, have your fingerprints taken and also have an eye test. If you don’t want to have your eyes tested at the DLTC you can have them tested with your optometrist. Don’t forget to ask your optometrist for a special form to take to the DLTC with you though!
How Long Will it Take?
How long your visit to the DLTC will take will depend on how many people are waiting! Your new driver’s license, however, will take about four to six weeks to arrive.
Do I Need to Pay?
Yep, you will need to pay a renewal fee for your license. This fee varies by location though, so you’ll need to ask your local DLTC about price.
Wait, I HAVE to Go to the DLTC?
Unfortunately, unlike many other bureaucratic processes these days, you can’t renew your driver’s license online. This is because you will need to have you fingerprints taken. Therefore, your only option is to go to a testing center.
Can’t Pick Up?
Whilst you do have to go to the DLTC in person to apply for renewal, if you’re not in a position to pick up your new license when it’s ready you can nominate someone else to do so for you. This person will need to go to the DLTC with you (and take their ID with them), and you must inform the officials that they will be collecting your new license.
License Renewal Outside of South Africa…
The only way you can renew a South African driver’s license is to be in South Africa. However, if your license expires when you’re outside of the country you can ask the RTMC (Road Traffic Management Corporation) for a certified letter that says you have held a South African license. In many countries this will allow you to swap your South African driver’s license for a local one.
And If I Don’t Have My Old License?
It can happen that you lose or otherwise damage your driver’s license, in which case you obviously won’t be able to take your old card to the DLTC. If this is the case then you can go without your old license, but you’ll be required to take your ID card and your passport. You’ll also need to pay for a temporary license whilst you’re waiting for your new one. Other than that though, the process for replacing a lost license is the same as for renewing a license.
Because driver’s license renewal does differ a little bit between locations you should check out your local DLTC conditions first. As we mentioned, price does vary, but some testing centers may require additional paperwork, such as certified copies of your ID, for example. Taking a trip to the DLTC can take a fair amount of time, so it’s best to check before you go to make sure you have all you need.
And there you have it. License renewal in South Africa is pretty simple, though it might take you a little time. But don’t forget that you will also need to think about your motor license, not just your driver’s license! (You can find out more by reading our Motor License Renewal: How To article). Safe driving!
