Motor Vehicle License: What Is It?
Every car in South Africa must be licensed. When you buy a car you must go to the license department and register your vehicle. Once you have your vehicle registration (which proves that the car belongs to you), you will be responsible for licensing your car. When you license your car you get a small disc to display on the windscreen of your vehicle that shows that your motor vehicle license is up to date. You need to renew your car license periodically, or risk getting fined. In fact, if you don’t renew your license at all within a four year period, your car registration becomes invalid! That’s why it’s important that you go through the vehicle license renewal process each year.
Be aware that car license renewal is NOT the same thing as renewing your driver’s license , nor is it the same as getting your learner’s license.
When Do I Need to Renew my Vehicle License?
You need to renew your vehicle license every year. If you look on your car license disc you’ll see an expiration date. You have a twenty one day grace period (meaning the latest date you can renew your license is twenty one days after the expiration date). If you do not meet this deadline you will pay penalties when you finally go to renew your license. As mentioned above, you can lose your vehicle registration if you don’t renew your license for a four year period, and without a valid vehicle license you risk being stopped and ticketed by police.
Where Do I Renew My License? The License Department
In order to renew your license you’ll need to visit the license department, that is the registering authority for your town or district. In some cases you can also perform motor license renewal at the post office, though not all post offices provide this service. You can find a list of Post office by state here.
What Do I Need to Take With Me for My Car License Renewal?
If your car is licensed in your own name, then you’ll need to take your identity card to the license department. You should also take the notification that you received through the mail (called a “motor vehicle license renewal notice (MVL2)”). If you didn’t get one of these notices then you’ll need to fill out “form ALV (Application for Licensing of Motor Vehicle).” You can get this form either from the license department itself, or again, from some post offices or on this link: MVL2 Form.
If your car is licensed to your company, or another organization, you will still need to take the documents mentioned above. However, you will also need to take the business certificate from your company or organization, as well as a letter of proxy – this letter will state that you have the right to renew the vehicle license on behalf of the company.
How Long Does it Take?
Your motor license renewal application will be processed on the same day. Costs will vary, but the price of the renewal will be mentioned on the notification that you receive to renew your license.
Can I Renew My License Online?
Unfortunately, it’s not currently possible to renew your car license online. This is mostly due to security risks. You must appear in person and show your identification card at the licensing authority.
Motor license renewal is important, no one wants to risk being fined or ticketed. Fortunately, whilst the process might be a little time consuming, it is simple. You just need to keep an eye on that expiration date on your license disc and make sure that you get to the license department on time!
