We may have done away with car washes, with Nissan’s new self cleaning car paint. The company has been known to always be on the lookout for new and interesting solutions or, in their own words, ‘committed to addressing everyday problems our customers face and will always consider testing exciting, cutting edge technology’. They have announced testing of a new kind of paint, named “Ultra-Ever Dry”, which is said to be hydrophobic and oleophobic, which means that it repels fluids and oil – thus keeping your car clean much longer than usual.
Nissan’s new self cleaning car paint is not yet available for purchase, since it is in the testing phase, but the specially adapted ‘Nissan Note’ car shows the effects which are very interesting, to say the least.
How Nissan’s New Self Cleaning Car Paint Works
Half of the Nissan Note has been treated with the ‘Ultra-Ever Dry’ paint, while the other half has regular paintjob. Additionally, the car is white, so the effects are easy to see. The technology employed creates a thin layer of air at the car’s surface, so when any dirt particles come in touch with the protective layer, they simply fall off.

Is Nissan’s New Self Cleaning Car Paint Really New?
Although this ‘new’ technology is undoubtedly impressive, it is not completely new, nor is it 100 foolproof. Regarding its novelty, it has been used in the past for various products, including mobile phones and tablets, as well as clothes and footwear. As to its success, there is still one main issue: the coating eventually washes off. This is important to remember, especially seeing that the average car is bound to endure a lot more wear and tear than your over protected cellular phone. For this reason, the existing technology will still have to be enhanced in order for it to be road worthy (pun intended…). Nevertheless, recent testing shows that the protective coat has performed well when faced with ‘normal weather conditions’, which include standing water, sleet, snow and frost so perhaps the final product is not far off.
So Nissan’s New Self Cleaning Car Paint Keeps My Car Clean?
So, if they solve the washing off issue, will my car then be able to stay dirt free? Well, the answer is ‘yes’ and ‘no’ because Nissan is not planning to make the coating a standard feature in the beginning, but rather a very cool – and probably pricey – added feature. This means you would probably have to pay an additional fee when buying the car. The question will then be whether the additional price is cheaper than the cost of washing your car and the time that it takes.
Provided that the tests show that the paint is of satisfying quality and durability this feature from Nissan is sure to become a standard feature in automotive industry within the next decade. This has happened with many other revolutionary products – which the self cleaning car paint definitely is, and is great car news for anyone tired of washing their auto every week!
