About Youi
Youi stands for “You Insured” and the company is a fairly new one on the South African Market. It is a wholly owned subsidiary of OUTSurance, and OUTSurance in turn is a member of the Rand Merchant Insurance Holdings Group. What does that mean? For you as a customer it means that even though Youi Insurance is a new company, it is financially backed by a recognised name, and so you can count on stability. Operating in Australia and New Zealand as well as in South Africa, Youi offers flexible short term insurance options.
Where is Youi Located?
Unfortunately, the Youi website does not list a physical address for the company’s headquarters, and when searching we were simply redirected to the OUTSurance website. Presumably this means that Youi shares their headquarters with OUTSurance. In this case the head office for Youi is at 1241 Embankment Road, Zwartkop Ext. 7, Centurion 0157.
Which Services Do Youi Provide?
As a short term insurer, Youi do not offer long term policies (for example, life insurance). The company focusses mainly on the home and vehicle insurance niches.
Car Insurance with Youi
Youi offers two vehicle insurance policies, known as Youi Comprehensive and Youi Basic. Both policies have flexible excesses (with a higher excess meaning smaller premiums- you can find out more about excesses on our car insurance terms and definitions page), and have a variety of optional extras that you can add.
Youi Comprehensive
A Youi Comprehensive vehicle insurance policy covers both damage to your vehicle as well as damage to other people’s property. You will also have theft and hijacking coverage. Features of this policy are as follows:
- Loss or damage to the vehicle are covered, including damage by animals or by storms or other natural disasters;
- Towing and storage are both covered;
- You will also have liability cover to cover costs of damage to the property of others, including their vehicles, but not including accidental death or bodily injury.
You will not be covered for driving under the influence, driving without a valid license, racing or leaving the scene of an accident. In addition you can add any of the following optional extras to your policy (at extra cost):
- Coverage for car hire should you be unable to drive your own vehicle;
- Coverage for sound systems and accessories (both factory fitted and non-factory fitted);
- Coverage for using your vehicle for business outside of South Africa;
- Safari, which extends your insurance coverage to other African countries;
- Coverage for when you vehicle is being sold and is in possession of someone who is selling it for you (such as a second hand car dealer lot);
- Coverage for vehicle finance shortfall (in case you get less from an insurance pay out than you owe to the bank for financing your car).
Youi Basic
Youi Basic is a limited cover vehicle insurance policy. This means that you are covered for damage to other people’s property, for theft and hijack and for damage done to your vehicle by fire. You are not covered for damage caused to your own vehicle in an accident, however. Features of this policy include:
- Loss or damage to your vehicle through fire, theft or hijacking;
- Damage to the property of others, including their vehicles, though not covering accidental death or bodily injury;
- Towing and storage are both covered.
Again, you will not be covered for driving under the influence, racing, driving without a valid license or leaving the scene of an accident. In addition, you can add optional benefits (at extra cost). These options are the same as the ones for the comprehensive policy, but do not include vehicle finance shortfall.
Extras from Youi
Both of the above policies include certain extras. These are:
- Youi Rewards, giving you one month’s premium back every three years;
- Access to a 24 hour helpline.
In addition to this, the Comprehensive vehicle insurance policy also includes R250,000 of accidental death coverage.
How Are Youi’s Customer Reviews?
Hellopeter, the website that lets consumers review service providers, lists only 9 reviews for Youi Insurance from the last twelve months. Compared to other insurance companies we’ve reviewed this is a very low number, possibly because Youi is a relatively new company. 5 of the 9 reviews are compliments, which gives Youi a 55% positive rating. However, given such a small number of reviews it’s difficult to judge the company based on these numbers. The interesting thing is that nearly all the negative reviews are about poor customer service, whilst nearly all the positive reviews are about good customer service. It must be said though that there has been no feedback from a Youi representative on any of the reviews, indicating that customer service at least online might not be a priority.
How User Friendly is the Youi Website?
When it comes to their policies, the Youi website give an excellent user experience. Finding information was easy, and the website gives a quick overview of their policies and then links to a very detailed product brochure. The policy details are explained clearly and without too much technical language, so they’re easy to read. We do have one small complaint though. The Youi website contains very little information about the company themselves, we couldn’t even find the address of their head office, for example. We think that consumers appreciate knowing who they’re buying from, and that Youi could improve their site by listing more information about the company.
Youi in Conclusion
Youi offers both a limited and a comprehensive vehicle insurance policy, both of which have plenty of optional extras making them very flexible. We can’t really judge consumer feedback on the company, however, since the number of posted reviews is just too small. Regardless of customer reviews though, you should always get as many quotes from as many companies as possible. This is the only way to make sure that you’re getting the best deal!
