Who are Auto and General?
Auto and General (also known as “Auto & General”) is an insurance company that was established in 1985. Focusing primarily on short-term insurance, Auto and General is a member of the Telesure Investment Holdings Group which also owns the following insurance companies: 1Life, Budget Insurance, Dial Direct, Ibuyeco, 1st for Women, Virseker, Unity Insurance, Virgin Money Insurance, AA Insurance and Prosper. The Telesure Group also owns Hippo which offers price comparisons between insurance companies. The fact that Hippo only offered quotes from companies owned by the Telesure Group was enough to gain them a R1 Million fine. However, as of the most recent update of this article (02.07.2015), Hippo are now offering quotes from non-Telesure companies as well, which should alleviate worries on that score.
A&G is currently under the executive leadership of L. Vermaak (CEO) and T.J. Creamer (Managing). According to their website, and in addition to providing short term insurance, A&G are also commitment to helping the disadvantaged and have a general awareness of social responsibility.

Auto and General provides a range of short-term insurance options, including business insurance, home and personal insurance, and vehicle insurance / car insurance.
When it comes to car insurance, Auto & General offer options for whatever type of vehicle you might own, including a car, motorcycle, trailer, caravan, or watercraft.
Under the car insurance policy, Auto and General provides the three basic choices: comprehensive car insurance, third party car insurance, fire and theft, and third party only.
The comprehensive option covers both your vehicle and third party claims in the event that you get into an accident with someone else. Auto and General’s comprehensive insurance plan covers:

- Theft and hijacking

Third party, fire and theft insurance covers accidental damage caused to a third party, as well as coverage for your vehicle against theft and fire. It does not cover damages you cause to your vehicle. In brief, this option covers:

- Towing and storage of your vehicle
The third party only policy, only coveres damages that you caused to other vehicles or property. As such, Auto and General’s third party only option covers accidental third party property damage and does not cover against theft, loss or damages to your vehicle.
What benefits does Auto and General offer?
Included in many of their insurance policies are what they call “assist benefits”. The following assist benefits are available at no extra charge if you choose the first two of the car insurance policy options (the comprehensive or the third party, fire and theft). The benefits are not available to those who choose the third party only option which is the cheapest cover.
The benefits include:
Entertainment assist – access to information regarding major entertainment events, hotel accommodations, restaurants and bookings, as well as general travel arrangements.
Medical assist – assistance in the event of any medical emergency. This benefit provides you with access to emergency telephonic assistance, emergency response by road or air ambulance, transfers by road or air to the most appropriate medical facility, transfers of lifesaving medication/blood, companionship and/or care for stranded minors and more.
Road assist – help in the form of Breakdown Assistance and Accident Assistance. Breakdown assistance covers towing to the nearest dealer after a mechanical/electrical breakdown, 72 hours’ free storage after tows, cover for the call-out fee + 1 hour’s labor for a car locksmith if your keys are locked in your car, cover for a call out fee and 1 hour’s labor when you have a flat tyre or battery, free emergency delivery of fuel (at a cost), roadside referral, mechanic referral, direction service.
Accident Assistance covers: towing and collision advice.
Trauma assist – provides access to trauma counseling sessions, assistance with courtroom preparation, referral to a safe place.
